RE: Preppers
Here is my lottery winner survive the apocalypse bug in plan. It's a 2000 sq ft underground bomb shelter. Walls are 1/2" steel plate with structural channel reinforcement. 12" of reinforced concrete around it and 24" over it covered by another 10' of soil. Enough supplies to last 6 people 7 years, and 3 years worth of seeds for planting. 6 people could stay here for 5 years then have enough seeds to start a food crop for 3 different years. There is 3000 gallons of propane for cooking and backup generators, but we are going to need solar power to last 7 years. The hole thing would be buried under the house.

Shelter: $1,500,000
Installation: $1,200,000
Supplies: $1,500,000
Weapons and Ammo: $1,800,000
Total cost not including land and house: $6,000,000

Need to up my food-gardening game a bit, though, as our garden is heavily biased towards ornamental perennials rather than anything edible.  An all-seasons garden would be better, and there's a plan to convert the front porch into a greenhouse after I get some foundation work done on it.

And I keep meaning to sign up for archery lessons, too.  (I know how to operate a bow but don't have formal training, nor do I currently own a compound bow.)  Maybe this fall, now that pandemic restrictions have eased a bit.
For survivalists a simple recurve is preferred.

Less moving parts means less to break or maintain....

Edit to add - solar panels are handy in remote, cut off locations. They should not however be your sole source of power - and there is maintenance. Mine on the hunting blind have been spiked by lightning TWICE - both times destroying the controller. You should keep spare parts.

Also - batteries do go bad - and you will need new ones. Unfortunately those will all have gone bad as well if nobody os making new ones... What to do? Buy MOTORCYCLE batteries that come shipped dry - no acid in them - those store indefinitely

The power outage that prompted this thread is over.

Back on commercial power. The generator secured, gas siphoned out and carburator run dry - and the oil ( synthetic) had been changed out.

The battery bank is all recharged and back on the solar panel - to keep it topped off.

The water gravity feed system has been shut dow and drained and we are back on the well pressure. 75 psi vs 3 psi......
