Preppers don't look so silly now.

Preppers don't look so silly now.
Do they?

The thing is - I expect things are going to get a whole lot worse for some people. Being forced to stay home really is just an inconvenience.

Wait till the spring storms knock the power out too. Or the city water supply.

Then what?

....

Power went out briefly here yesterday. No big deal. I have backup power - a battery bank, inverter and 2 generators.

Being prepared for emergencies isn't paranoid - it's a recognition of reality.

A generator is the one thing I haven’t got in my stash yet. I do Have an array of deep cycle boat batteries and inverters that I can charge with our vehicles if necessary
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Preppers still look silly. As silly as any consumer trend, anyway. Generators and batteries, lol. High dollar retail items that will work for..maybe, a week after the gas stations close and the lights go out. An old lawn mower will pull the same trick.

If people were "prepping" - rather than consuming - they'd realize that generator failure, rather than grid failure, is the real emergency. Alot more fun to buy a new toy at lowes than to dig or build cold storage, I suppose. Cheaper than PVs, too.

Strange irony, in that people who live in urban areas have already signed their bid for survival - and there's not really a credible way to "prep" for them...but we rurals have all sorts of opportunities that by and large no one wants to fuck with. Content in imagining that engaging in this society's main occupation is...somehow™...preparing them for it's collapse.

I can tell you know nothing about what is involved.

I can go 6 months on my own power. And that is if I don't leave the farm to look for more gas.

My batteries will last for years. I use the same batteries as my cars - and they get replaced with new every couple of years. They are always kept charge by a solar panel. I have 200 amp chargers to quick charge them off the generator.

My water supply - I have gravity tanks (including a winter use tank - inside a heated garage) that I can fill from my well - so I don't even need to run the generator every day.

Any schmuck can shiver in the dark - hungry and cold.

"Leave the farm looking for gas"...lol. Sounds like the amount of ammo you have is more relevant than the amount of fuel.

You asked if preppers still look silly. I answered. Now I'm left wondering how many cans of prepper corn and 5.56 rounds a silly person would trade for a gallon of ethanol - or if it's just murder all the way down, lol.

-you know, I know what it is that I find so hilarious about prepping now. It's a combo between a living wake and a viking funeral. Pack a ship full of shit for the next life. More out of compulsion than practicality or need. It can make a person feel better in this one, even if it won't mean much in the next.

Prepping is like a religion. They both give you the warm and fuzzies. Nothing wrong with that. Dunno

If the world's gone to shit to the point that you NEED 6 months worth of supplies, then it's probably safe to say that this world probably isn't worth living in anymore.

Maybe not, but you'd still be stuck living in it past the six. Fair bet that leveraging our consumer impulses towards more effective means -at that point-... would be "prepping". Otherwise, we're just looking to pick a few weeks of bones off the carcass of our dying civilization..and then what. Aggressive scavenging.

I bet you don't know any Amish people - do you?

While I don't agree with their Luddite view of technology - I have learned a few things from them.

The Amish have a thing about keeping a year's supply of food on hand. (I got this from the father of an Amish family - over a dinner they invited me to join).. It's not out of paranoia - or fear of the end of the world - but out of practicality. He said "What is a man going to do if he breaks both legs falling off a ladder? How is he going to feed his family? Is he to beg from his neighbor? It's better to be ready as best you can for the future you can't see".

I found that to be an excellent attitude - and decided to embrace and expound on the philosophy.. Self reliance is a good thing.
