Pierre ‘Pig’s Eye’ Parrant was one of the first settlers in what is now Saint Paul, Minnesota. The village that grew around his tavern was briefly know as ‘Pig’s Eye’ before the name was changed by a Catholic missionary. The wife of the owner of the team ran across this factlet and decided that the team’s mascot should be a pig.

Post on a Facebook page I recently found on the history of the Outer Banks has a photo of old, old store. It just happened to have been owned by my great, great grandparents. Learning lots of interesting stuff on that page.
A few days ago someone posted a link with pictures of the naval base that used to be there and I thanked them and said my dad helped build that base and I was born there. A lady responded with, "Was Fritz your dad and Brenda your mom?" I said yes and she said she is a friend of one of my aunts and remembers when I was born.
I am going to need to scroll back on that page to see what other interesting stuff I can find.

I learned that the thin, elongated peppers that were on my Chicago dog last night are called sport peppers.
I was shopping for peppers to add to chili and saw them on the shelf. I'm still not sure what they're good for, but I have a slogan, "Monkey see, monkey buy!" So, I had to have them.

It is with a deep sense of regret that I report that, in August of 1892, a topless sword fight (triggered by a dispute over a floral arrangement) between Princess Pauline and Countess Anastasia, both of Austria, did NOT take place.
I feel so cheated.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The Afghanistan war is the only major US military conflict with every American soldier accounted for - no MIAs or unidentified remains. This makes it the only US war (to date) which will not be represented in one of the various 'unknown' tombs.
