What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
RE: What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
Where to look for cheaper hotel rates. I am glad I had originally signed up for free cancellation if by a certain date. I managed to save enough to pay for another night in a hotel, if needed, but will probably actually be enough to feed me the whole drive or pay for at least half of the gas. Score.

Counting down the days. Smile

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The loggerhead sea turtles here in the Caribbean have been tracked to migrate across the Atlantic and back to where there were hatched to breed. It was previously a mystery why there were lengthy gaps in sightings of individual turtles. One individual young turtle released off the coast of Colombia was reported in Haiti 20 -days- later, then later in the Azores, then later off Africa, and years later back in the Caribbean.

Source: as told to me by a marine biologist involved in sea turtle research.

When he was police commissioner of New York City, Theodore Roosevelt was required by law to provide police protection for Hermann Ahlwardt, a German preacher who came to the city to preach anti-Semitism and stir up public resentment against Jews.

Roosevelt followed the law and assigned 40 uniformed officers to guard Ahlwardt - all Jewish.

Apparently, I (and evidently much of Hollywood) had an understanding of the DEFCON system that’s exactly backwards. DEFCON 5 is actually the lowest level of readiness the US military will allow itself. DEFCON 2 is basically Cuban Missile Crisis levels. And, evidently, DEFCON 1 would have to be about this level:

Evidently, it takes an alarmingly long time for a species to be confirmed extinct. I’m actually familiar with the case of the Kauai O’o. The last time anyone sighted the damn species, I wasn’t even born yet. And it only officially became extinct last year.

And, yes, the 1987 recording in the video is the last time ANY human has encountered one. And they didn’t even see him.
