What should have media supposedly do? Praise him?
Maybe Stallone should have shown him more love and not just his ass
It’s a bit more complicated than that; he grew up wealthier than most of us, but he grew up in a dysfunctional family with a biological mother with some glaring narcissistic tendencies, a stepmother who was strict in a way that borders on abusive, and a father who’s oblivious enough that not only is he willing to waste his fortune on a shoddy documentary, but when confronted with his son showing him misogynistic websites and claims he agrees with those philosophies that he himself calls evil, thinks the best thing to do is toy with the idea of taking him to Vegas and getting him laid, and even thinks it’s okay for him to live on his own after he threatened to kill himself.
I don’t think that he “hung out with movie stars,” exactly. He was at the premiere of
The Hunger Games because his dad was an AD and managed to get him a ticket, but the most famous person I could find who really hung out with him was Dale Launer, who co-wrote
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and
My Cousin Vinny. As far as I can see, I have more of a connection with Jimmy Webb from the time I got an autograph from him at Ravinia than Elliot got from Sly Stallone.
Overall, it looks like the reason he wasn’t able to appreciate it is because of learned helplessness, partly from his dysfunctional family and partially because he may or may not have had an ASD. But then again, I had a narcissistic mother and an ASD, but I’m not that stupid, so that excuse can only go so far. Especially when several people, including Launer, apparently tried to get him out of his gumption trap and failed spectacularly.
