Could you explain this accusation a little more? I know that Jesus wants us to love him more than we love our own family members, but what great effort did he put forth towards destroying the family unit?

RE: Moral universalism and theism
If you've ever seen what it's like to become a Christian when your family is devoted to another religion then you will understand what Jesus meant in those verses. In America, one of the most Christian nations in all of history, most families are fine with their children becoming Christians, in fact many parents seek to raise their children inside of a church. When Jesus says this he is pointing out the fact that a pagan family will not tolerate someone who converts from the family's faith. I have only heard stories of this from missionaries who work to establish churches in nations outside of America, but often times once their teaching has taken root inside of a new believer that new born Christian needs to decide if they are going to secretly be Christian around their family or abandon their family in favor of their new family in Christ. It's not that Jesus necessarily wants to tear families apart but it's that he understands just how evil a pagan household can be and how much they can hold back a person's spiritual growth. If you love Jesus more than your family then some families will disown you. We're still called to honor our parents though and Jesus does not preach unnecessary rebellion or creating strife and division within the home for no reason.
