What date do you estimate atheism will overtake theism in the world population
September 7, 2017 at 10:31 pm
For many years now I've felt like the world is losing its religion quite literally. Polls around the world show a trend of fewer and fewer theists. So much so that in some countries atheism is the majority. However on the global scale theism still dominates atheism. We do see the young are far less likely to be theists, and the numbers of atheists there lend support to my idea that theism is dying. So the question is this at what year do you think atheism will become the majority on the global stage?

I think when mankind finally creates artificial intelligence that surpasses humans in maybe all tasks, we would have been advanced enough collectively to mostly discard religion.

When there is no more money. Or in other words when world become something like Star Trek where we have replicators making us what ever we want. I mean just imagine if we didn't have to work for money and didn't have to use money to buy food, shelter and new Mercedes do you honestly think there would be patriarchs and gurus worried about what people believe or not? Do you? When what you believe in doesn't reflect their bank account.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

FM, do you believe we can ever reach the ST utopia with mankind's current mindset? I believe we need an earth shattering paradigm shift to occur with at least 50% less population before that state is possible. In other words ...boom boom.

yeah I guess there is a war against disinformation. On one side you have oil giants that are spreading disinformation how oil is the best thing ever to befall on humanity and should never ever be substituted because all other things are deadly and bad for everything and everyone.
On the other side technology is going forward either crawling or flying, but it's going. If anything else fails there is always ITER situated in rural part of France and one day, may it be in decades, that will eventualy change the world.
This reminds me back when I was a lad in 1865 when train and carriage industries were spreading false information about upcoming new thing called the car saying that it will destroy the roads, scare the horses and injure people. They went so far that they managed to lobby for a law called Red Flag Act in which every car had to be accompanied by a crew of three including a person with a red flag walking at least 60 yd to warn people for incoming car, which was only to drive up to 4 mph and 2 mph in towns. Needles to say that was brainwashing people that didn't stick for long, but also Oil Companies now are the most powerful industries yet so it's going to take longer if not impossible to beat.

I put "never" because there wasn't an answer late enough.
I'd say if atheism ever takes over... it will be in centuries; not decades.

If by atheism, you mean not just a disbelief in various fictional anthropamorphized beings concocted to assuage anxiety and pretend to answer haunting doubts, but also an embracing of rational attitudes towards these goals, then I have to say that it not on the horizon. Overthrow the deities, and they will substitute aliens or various mystical agents like Chi. There may no longer be a majority following for deity in the strictest sense of deity, but the reliance on, and the institutionalizations and privileging of, the make belief will remain just as strong.
You can beat the ridiculousness of this deity or that into people's heads. Religions and sects have been doing that to eachother's deity since time immemorial.
You can popularize the wickedness of this religion or that in exposes, Religions and sects have also been doing that to eachother's deity since time immemorial.
But it is difficult to inculcate intellectual rigor on a large scale when feeble minded make belief seem to assuage anxiety and provide appearance of answers. Feebleness of mind absence of intellectual backbone as the more typical attribute of men than the alternative is not something for which there is as yet any solution on the horizon.

If by atheism you mean not just disbelief in the deities in the traditional sense, but also in various mystical agents like chi, gurus, or aliens that may arise, then I'd say the ensure is not just so long it might as well be never, it probably is never.

What??????
Look, if theists can be delusional then so can I.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
