No Deus, no. First off Garbriel Funes was not speaking on behalf of the entire Vatican (that's what dope pope is for) when he was commenting on astrobiology.
Secondly, neither was he accepting the factual scientific findings of how life evolved on Earth, he only accepts the potential for life to originate and develop to resemble life on this planet without magic man *elsewhere in the universe*. He deliberately excludes Earth from the argument to bolster Roman Catholic supernatural beliefs, this fallacious approach that we've all heard a million times before is called special pleading.
Look it up.

Who gives a flying fuck what the Vatican thinks or says..until they come clean with their rapist priests and bring them to justice, their organization is nothing more than a base for crimes that should be raided by the authorities.

The vatican and the pope have released statements numerous times over the years to this effect about life and humans evolving on this planet. I think it's still more or less unofficial at this point, but I'm certain that the catholic faith isn't a 'creationist' faith in the sense that they believe that the earth is 6,000 years old and all that.
I had to research this for a post in a discussion with statler waldorf and I've found older statements by the current and two previous popes to this effect.
So this is nothing new.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925
Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

The Church has admitted the truth of the theory of evolution for a WHILE. But this doesn't change anything. I have talked to some Catholic Creationists and their answer is "you know, even the Church can say stupid things sometimes". This is really frustrating but expected :/
