Sandwiched between the larger baby boomer and millennial generations, Gen X typically doesn’t get as much attention as its older and younger cohorts despite making up around 20% of the population. But America needs to start paying attention: Born between 1965 and 1980, the Gen Xers on the cusp of their seventh decade are, theoretically, just a few years away from leaving the workforce.

The US will pass a law making them work until 70yo before getting full SSI. Nothing to be concerned about.

My full SSA was at 65-1/2, iirc (born in '52). I asked my financial advisers at age 61 what the crossover year was for me if I started taking SS at 62, and I was told 81. Fuzzy on the exact numbers; it's been almost 10 years. I retired at 62. Whatever money I made was assured. I went that way because I was tired beyond belief and wasn't sure how long I'd live. I have one male in my family tree who has lived longer than I; he died a few weeks ago at age 95. One died at 64. All the rest died no older than age 58. Not good numbers. I'm pretty sure that if I had worked to 65-1/2, I'd be dead now, and no money after that, needless to say. Funny to think, I may live another 20 years, after all. The money I would have made those last few years likely wouldn't have benefited me. Not rich by any means, but I have enough to keep warm and dry.

I pretty much retired at 62. Since then I have worked part time and for the last 3-1/2 years for the same company (at home). I now make close to the maximum I can before they would start cutting into my SSA. After cancer and a heart attack, I figured if I could manage it, I was ready for a bit of a breather. Since I don't have to commute and don't have to worry about work attire...I come out about even and invest a lot less time. And I like my job and it helps keep my brain functioning.

Husband was home on vacation a couple weeks lately and one day I carried my laptop from the living room to the office and he commented that I had a hell of a commute.

It's even better now...I got another laptop and till the old one completely croaks, I don't even have to schlep a laptop from room to room.
