teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
Okay, yes living in your own house
is better than living in jail. So let me rephrase my question: Without breaking any legal laws, why be decent or good? I'm serious, what is the point of simply doing the right thing? Why can't we be like the animals? They all live the same way. How have we evolved to the point where there are good people and bad people that react differently? In three words: assholes make enemies.
There's also that thing about feeling better about yourself when you help someone else out.
Virtue is its own reward. The good life is not a destination, but a road. Step off the path at your regret.
