Very common on war memorials - the motto of the Royal Canadian Legion is "Memoriam Eorum Retinebimus," or "We will remember them" (retain the memory of them).
The passage essentially means that [others'] memories of the dead will eventually fade into nothingness.

I just turned 66, and I'm currently studying Latin in university (going into my second year of Latin, and my first year of Greek, in September). I have a very good memory for alphanumeric data (still remember the phone number my family had fifty years ago), and because I play in concert bands that sometimes rehearse or perform at Legions I regularly see monuments and plaques with the Legion slogan on it.
I thought laws make it essentially impossible for somebody over the age of 27 to start studying at a university.

Is that the law in Croatia? If it is, it's a horrible one.

Well, I don't know the details, but generally yes. Laws in Croatia make it difficult to start studying at a university if you are over the age of 27.

For once the US is better. I can take college courses and earn credits for free at some schools now due to my age. I couldn't have done that in my 20s, 30s, 40s...

I'm also going to university for free - No tuition for anyone 65 or older. I just need to buy books and pay any lab fees (only $30 for one math class so far), plus transportation, coffee and an occasional snack (I usually bring my own lunch).

I'm looking forward to turning 62 in two years. That's the cutoff for senior rates at the U. I'm going to try to learn Hmong.

Are you not aware that different countries have different laws?

My great-aunt (who was a college president and a nun) got her 7th master's degree when she was 82 or so.
She inherited my great-granny's bossiness, and my great-gampa's humor.
She wrote her own obituary.
In that she said "reality is what it is".
I'm fairly sure she no longer at that time was a traditional 'believer".
It came to light in the period around her death, that she had been (quietly) "sneaking off" to "cosmological conferences".
She was always fascinated by E.T., and went to see it many times.

I wasn't aware that those laws about who can study at a university differ so substantially between countries.

I did some searching online and could not find anything about not going to school in Croatia after the age of 27.
