(Everyone says: Hi Red we are Atheist too.) lol get it AA.
Anyway after waiting for a long time for "god" to hold up his end of the bargain to show me he is real i decided religion was a bunch of crap. And it went on from there. I feel more relieved and happy but on the down side my parents....
They usually say "its just 45 minutes," "quit being a big baby," "we don't want to go to hell for not making you go to church."
One day I rebelled and my dad started yelling at me like crazy and I yelled back. Ended up making him cry so he was down then mom stepped in.
(I wanted to stay home so I could do something productive like finish making these Final Cut videos and becuase i finished those videos my client gave me $200.)
I threaten them I would leave or hang myself becuase I'm tired of their bull.
So they went to church and i stayed home and worked.
btw I'm 18.
They came back home and said "Leave or go to church"
I stayed becuase where else would I go?
Now today my mom is making me sign a contract stating I will go to church and act like I like it or I will get kicked out of the house.
That's my story.
I needed some help and comfort of communicating with people who share similar beliefs.
I googled and found this place.
Just wow!!! and I thought I'm the guy who lives in a rough and hostile environment! at least in our household no one ever makes an effort to convert anyone or send'em to mosque or something. on the otherhand, when I was around your age, in school and highschool they forced us pray and go to the schools sanctuary (well, let's say it's rather largest room in our schools that religious stuff is going on) to pray, read qur'an and listen to religious crap, listen to some speeches about the same crap, and all the other crazy stuffs going on in Islam... In my military service we would've been punished if we didn't show up to pray or the teachings of Islam classes. I got busted once for 48 hours in a private cell for it and from then on I decided to participate in hope of not getting in a cold cell without a blanket and full of nasty cockroaches, and I hated cockroaches, and I HATE cockroaches.
All in all, welcome and know that you have a sympathizer who have been in similar situations all his life, but never at home. That's actually what I really like about my parents, they never forced me to the way of god.

i do my own laundry, take out trash, dishwasher fix computers and computer problems.
I think my original point was that you are a contributing member to the house hold and as such do have some privleges.... "can't go to church cos I have to..... clean??" You are not a slave (endentured or otherwise)
Just a thought. Computer maintenence is a good one I am thinking.
(takes up most of my time...hours in fact...Sundays are good as there isn't alot happening online cos they are at church) Like i said...just a thought.

It's interesting that your mom & dad think that they'll go to hell if you personally are an atheist. Sounds like a very selfish reason to try to keep you religious.
I think what it mostly is that they are uncomfortable with the idea of you burning in hell. It's the same reason my mother-in-law wants me to go talk to the local priest. She said that she couldn't stand getting to heaven and knowing that I was suffering in hell. On the one hand, that sounds like a noble reason to want someone to be religious, but on the other hand, all it really is that they want you to change because they're uncomfortable with their own religious beliefs. Of course it's not fair at all. Why should I go to church and make myself beleieve in something I don't believe in just because you're uncomfortable with the idea of hell? Is it incumbent upon me to change my life to make you happy, or should you examine why you believe that an all-good, loving god created hell and sends people there?
It really sucks that your mom & dad are threatening to kick you out if you don't change your beliefs. That doesn't sound like what Jesus would do, since in the bible he always dined with sinners. I think it's probably a last resort bluff on their part in order to try to force you to go to church. But be prepared in case they are willing to follow through with it. Don't forget there are many college grants available for new students, and I think that might be your best bet. Of course you'll probably also need to work to pay the rent if they're not willing to help you out.
On the other hand, they are your parents, and you should probably listen to them just long enough to finish school and get out on your own. After all, you are living under their roof, and like it or not, they make the rules. It's just for a couple months, and then you have the rest of your life to ignore church. You may not like it, but it might be better to suck it up and do what you have to to survive rather than be out on your own with no job, no place to live, no money, etc.
But of all the reasons to kick someone out of your house, this has to be the crappiest. It's not like you're doing drugs or anything. I guess the one prophecy out of the bible that ever came true was when Jesus said he would put family member against family member.

Strange that they aren't trying to make you religious but think that you need to attend for some reason. It's as if they think if they can drag you to church you'll somehow be magically transformed into a Jesus junkie. I mean, what's the point in making you go if you're not going to get anything out of it? I know Catholics think that you will get to heaven if you go to church every week, but if you don't have any interest or belief in what's going on, do they really think that God will be OK with it? It's like they think he's thinking, "Here's some kid who doesn't believe in me, but he goes to church every week, so I'll let him into Heaven."
I'd offer to go to church with them if they'll attend an atheist lecture some time.

Red_Baron,
I'd advise you to submit a letter to Ask Richard on Hemant Mehta's [i]Friendly Atheist[i] site ( http://friendlyatheist.com). He frequently deals with issues similar to yours.
I find him very good.
