RE: The Hiking Life
More a runner than hiker but enjoyed hiking whenever i did it. I enjoyed the peace and solitude as well as the fear of the unknown.

A thread I started from when I was paid to hike: https://atheistforums.org/thread-32311.html

ETA: just realized the pictures don't link because Tinypic died long ago. Will repost some later.

The only hiking I ever did was in the local park across from where we lived when I was growing up.

Great pix! I'll admit the most fearsome fauna I've yet encountered in the wimpy Whites are the gray jays who populate the local summits, intent on sharing the seeds in the unwary hiker's lunch.

I prefer hiking to backpacking. I like going back into town for the finer things vs. roughing it in the wilderness.

I lived close to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado for many years. Loved that place.

Good thread.

Hiked a bit over 12 miles last weekend with my dog. I tore my MCL a year ago and this was the first real pain free hiking I've been able to do. We wore blaze orange on Friday and Saturday (no hunting Sunday). We left only paw prints.

I hiked a portion of the Annapurna circuit in Nepal last year. Here's my favorite photo:

RE: The Hiking Life
My town has almost 30 miles of trails that connect with state land and trail systems. It's public land so hunting is allowed, mostly upland birds and waterfowl though there are some bow hunters out for deer. Shotgun deer season is when we stick to the town sidewalks - it's only 2 weeks this year. Muzzle loader season goes until Dec 30.

Other hikers comment on the orange vest I put on my dog and the orange hat or coat I wear. It's like it just occurred to them that they don't want to get shot.
