Hi all, Doubting Thomas here. I normally post on the atheiststoday.com board and fstdt.com comments, but got clued into this board by my nephew. I was raised Catholic but fortunately overcame my brainwashing. I've been an atheist for around 10 years or so now. I live in the bible belt so have to pretty much stay in the closet about my atheism, and most of the other atheists I know are online.

Welcome to the forums, feel free to drop anchor and join in anywhere you find interesting. Where about are you from? Anywhere near GA?
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

If you don't mind, why don't you tell us a little about yourself, your interests, your pet peaves, etc. Nothing that gives away your identity, if that concerns you.

Well, I wrote up an article that details how I went from being a fervent Catholic to an atheist, I just haven't posted it here yet. I plan on posting it to the Converts Corner section soon.

As far as religious beliefs go, I'm pretty easygoing with whatever people want to believe as long as they don't try to force beliefs on others. I guess this is why Christianity gets under my skin so much. I don't care if they want to believe that God created the world in 7 days, made a woman from a man's rib (who was made out of dirt), cast a spell upon all humanity because a snake told that woman to eat fruit from a magic tree, and have to believe in a dead guy on a stick who was his own father in order to have that evil curse lifted so you can live forever with him if you symbolically eat his flesh, drink his blood, and telepathically tell him that he's your savior. Just as long as they're not trying to force it upon everyone else or into government, which they always seem to be trying to do.

I consider my political views to be moderate, being somewhat liberal when it comes to social issues, and conservative when it comes to fiscal issues. I consider myself to be a libertarian, in that I believe that everyone has the right to live however they want to live as long as it doesn't infringe upon anyone else's rights. This is quite a change from the conservative Republican I was before I lost my religious beliefs. Now I see things far more clearly.

As far as interests go, I'm into shortwave radio listening & ham radio, I make my own wine, I love fishing, and I've recently revived my interest in chess (even though I'm not real good yet). I'm married with a 1 year old son and another baby on the way, due sometime in November. My wife is still Catholic, and even though she is OK with me not being religious, she still wants me to go back to the church, which I have no interest in doing.
