Because it is a welfare program for the arms merchants.

RE: China and U.S. Cold War.
Do you truly expect them not to try at all to close the gap with us when the military capability is such that we can do pretty much anything we want in their backyard where as they have no capability to do any at all in ours? If we don't want them to try to match our capability, maybe we shouldn't be so profligate about throwing money at capabilities which other people would have to later match??

If our standard of military security is our military must be so much stronger than everyone else's that no one can possibly defeat it, even in their own back yard, we make ourselves the red cap to which every bull would be tempted to charge. Imagine what we would do if the Chinese acts as if their security is only garranteed if their military is so strong that we can't possibly defeat it even in Chasepeake bay.

But, even so, they are more patient then we. They are not as tempted by the immediate if false gratifications of appearent military supremacy. Much as we scream about their arms build up, they spend much smaller fraction of their economy on the military then we. They just spent about as much as we spent each year on military on a national system of high speed trains. They go for investing in long term fundamental productivity. Their let us enjoy our bottled hard-ons of hoorahs and stealth drones, and the french fires of deficit spending and lack of fundamental economic policy. They are building more robust fundamental health that would allow them to compete with us in the future from the advantageous position of a larger, solvent, and industriously productive economy. They go for real virility rather than viagra. Oh, wait, I forgot, real virility is "socialist".

Stories like this are leaked to frighten the Great Unwashed into thinking that China is going to challenge the US Navy.

Quote:NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- China's first aircraft carrier could begin trials as early as this summer--a move that would drastically alter the appearance of the balance of power in the region, the chief of US forces in the Pacific said Tuesday.

Really, admiral? Change the balance of power. Its the Varyag...a piece of Russian shit that they couldn't finish and then gave to Ukraine who sold it on fucking E-Bay or something to China.

Yet, the military industrial complex will use such "threats" as a reason for us to keep pumping trillions into "defense."

Well, will a Chinese carrier effect the balance of power in the region? In 5 years when they learn to use it, maybe. Will it be favorable to the Chinese and unfavorable to the US, probably. But so what? With the second largest economy in the world, the most solvent government finances in the world, growing at 5 times our rate, that will surpass ours in less time than it takes to order a new carrier today, build it, test it, and train the crew until it is properly efficient, the Chinese are still concentrate on just improving the balance of power in their own back yard, an area the size of gulf of mexico, while at peace.

We, with one of the less solvent economies in the world, stagnant, under invested, being rapidly overtaken by China, are trying protect the balance of power everywhere in the world, while fighting 3 wars.

See the problem?

American can not sustain 50% of the world's military budget on 25% of the world's economy. yet we are finding every excuse to keep our 50%, or drive it even higher, while the Chinese chip away our 25% while rapidly driving their own pass 25%.

I've been thinking the same thing. 14-16? Seriously. That would explain a lot and help me be a bit less critical.

Oh,I find that hard to believe. I was thinking a fairly unread high school student (year10?) with limited critical thinking skills. I'm not being mean, that's an honest assessment based on the posts I've read.

Nothing much, missed all you grouchy ol' curmudgeons during my little forum hiatus. I'd hug Min too but I think he bites.

Just repeating what I was told. I'd be inclined to agree as many of these ideas were ones I held around the age of 13, but hey... [shrugs]
