Tony Abbott

Tony Abbott
For the Australians on here, I want to ask something.

Well I was reading an article in today's Australia and a commentator talked about voters finding Tony Abbott well a bit scary. I am wondering if you find him well a bit scary.

I certainly do, there has always been the issue of himself being a quite devout conservative Catholic. However I find guys like Fred Nile and Stephen Fielding more scary because they are evangelicals and believe all those who aren't evangelicals are going to hell. I am not sure about Abbott's views on who goes to heaven and who goes hell.

The thing I find scary about him is exemplified in that stunt he did recently where he joined a protest against the proposed carbon tax, which was organized by groups such as the Citizens Electoral Council and the League of Rights.

Tony Abbott, like most right wing religious comservatives, is quite dangerous to a progressive future. I think he will do anything & say anything to get into Government. Historically, the Australian National / Liberals have been a big supporter of big industry and the rich, the economy is the bottom line, all other matters are secondary. Not to say the economy isn't inportant, but you need to put it into perspective. When John Howard was Prime Minister, Unions were abolished and work contracts were the norm. This did little for the 'working' person, much for companies and limited such things as pay increases.

Tony Abbott would run the same type of Government, only more extreme in my view.

You have some what different views politically to myself. However I am willing to agree to disagree with you. For example; a generation or so ago, I would have sat quite comfortably in the "left" wing of the Liberal Party. However these days my political allegiance lies with the Left of the Labor Party or the Greens, that is partly a response to the sheer arse kissing of Conservative Christians both parties do alas. Honestly as I see it, there is no need to do this in a country where Atheists outnumber conservative Christians.

As I see, there are members of both the parliamentary Liberal and National parties, who are fairly decent enough in my view. In fairly decent I mean, they support rational social policies and don't deny global warming is a reality. However the both the Liberal and National parties have seen religious social conservatives become increasingly more powerful and that worries me.

A bit a bit scary? Nah,just another opportunistic politician with an elastic ethical code. My feelings towards him are pretty such as to politicians as an ilk; distrust and contempt.

I find it hard to believe that even under Abbott, the Libs could make a bigger pig's breakfast of things than Labor under Lady Macbeth.--THAT'S why I voted for neither shower at the last election; I honestly couldn't tell which one would be worse. Confusedhock:

Sorry for the sidetrack, but every time I see this guy's name I se that "hey Abbot" skit pop into my head.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post
