Just to introduce myself: I'm Tim, a Christian from the UK, engaged (the wedding is at the end of July!) and a member of an Anglican (C of E) church. I'm interested in a wide-range of things from theology and philosophy to history to maths and science. Below is a picture of me wearing a silly hat in Cape Town in front of a stunning view from the top of Table Mountain a couple of years ago (I'm ever so slightly less skinny now). Smile

C of E? (Catholicism lite) I guess if you MUST be a Christian, probably just about the most harmless flavour. Its members seem to be mainly pillocks of the establishment and little old ladies of both sexes who drink an ordinate amount of sherry and sing ghastly songs. The great thing about Anglicanism is that if you become an atheist ,nobody will notice.Angel Cloud

Personal story, obliquely relevant:

About ten years go,a good friend had two boys who were choristers at Kings College Cambridge. I saw a lot of them in action, especially in the the beautiful Kings College chapel. I was brought up devout Catholic. I couldn't spot the difference in the ritual. (they even crossed themselves)

Unlikely, Anglicans tend to have more breeding than those dogmatic fundy and Christian-but-not-a member- of-a-church dropkicks we usually get here.

Welcome to the forums.

@pad, and no I don't take everything personal, nor am I the crusader for Christianity.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Don't worry about the comment above, Tim. It's just one of the side effects of video game addiction. The scenery is beautiful indeed.

I didn't say it wasn't 'beautiful'... just that it was missing something. That something being a planar invasion from one of the gods of the Blood Storm. What it means to not see one is that they are gathering together for a concerted attack upon the land... and that's bad. That's very bad.

I have no interest in preaching - only in discussion.

G'day padraic! You're right that some forms of Anglicanism look very much like Catholicism both in terms of belief and practice - they tend to be called "Anglo-Catholic". My church is the other end of the spectrum - low church (so very little "ritual" or liturgy) and pretty inclusive in terms of the range of views that people hold. We prefer inordinate amounts of tea, coffee and cake rather than sherry at my church, but of course we have our fair share of pillocks like any random group of people. :p

Hey Tim! Welcome, make yourself at home! ^_^
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Tim:

Grab a cold one from the fridge and - by all means - let's talk. Believe it or not, even a sulphur-smelling heathen like me has some friends who happen to believe in an Old Man in the Sky (mostly Jews and Christians, a few Moslems).

And I'm glad you are not planning on preachin' on this particular hillock; I think the regulars are heavily vaccinated against most popular strains of bullshit. But if you want to talk, let's talk (as in "ManU or Chelsea?" kinda talk.)

Welcome
