Yes, the BBC has a full page article on that age old question: do the Smurfs provide a good model for society? (Includes discussion of the UN film made against warfare on civilians where Smurfette is blown up in an aerial bombing raid.) - James

Recently a French author wrote a book about the inherent racism and tribal tendencies of Smurfs. Gargamel (the wizard that wants to kill the Smurfs) supposedly looks suspiciously Jewish and the only female Smurf is Blond, the bad smurfs are black and diseased. etc...

The smurfs are a cartoon where there are smurfs. So it's not realistic.

Of all the things that could be debated to create a good model for society, why the Smurfs?
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Smurfs illustrate why agnosticism is just too much trouble. Yes if they do have any existence outside of a comic strip, I can't know. If it weren't so much bother I might come down firmly against the existence of smurfs. However, as with every other magical being whose existence is beyond knowing but dubious, I really just don't care.

I haven't done much research on this matter myself but Donnie Darko said they were good, so I'll just go with that.
