Pompey the great more or less stamped out piracy in the Med for the Roman Republic. He was not a pirate himself.

Er...Republican navy. Although Pompey did exceed his authority the Senate did not care.

France is a beautiful country, (yes, I've been) which the English have always considered far too good for The French (OK, since 1066)
