Hostility

RE: Hostility
Maybe re-reading some of the quotes that were posted will help everyone with some self evaluation,...

William H. Asshat, was clearly in a volatile place,... and seemed to be completely irrational.

Clearly this individual needs to get control of his emotions,

outburst of raw emotion

massive over-reaction... his hostility ignited by the subject

I...find myself losing my grip and giving into hostility.

people in general do bug the shit outta me and I certainly don't mind using superlatives to express this fact.

I find myself losing my cool

I have had a problem with my temper ever since I was a kid.

I knew that I overreacted many times.

...or just pretend that the person you're responding to on the other side of the key board, is not William H. Asshat, but John D. Asswhooper, a 6'7 285 pound kickboxer who doesn't see the waste in churlish comebacks. If Atheist Forums were to ever have a meet and greet, you might have the unfortunate pleasure of meeting up with MR. John D.

RE: Hostility
Meh, people get hostile, sometimes we do it for no reason. Of course if someone gives you a reason to be hostile, why worry about it? My opinions and two bucks will get you a nice cup of coffee.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I don't know that the "fear of reprisal" angle would work for me. One, I don't want to live my life based on decisions founded in fear, and two, I'm the guy that no one fucks with... I am not as big as your 'John D', but yeah, people don't tend to want to get in an altercation with me.

I'm not even saying that I have a temper problem - per say. I have a problem with letting my hostility take my words too far. It's the going too far - and crossing the line that bugs the shit outta me.

More evidence of man's obsession with Euclidean Geometry.

Just so there's no misunderstanding, mine was a general response for everybody. It was nothing personal toward anyone in particular. Hope it didn't come across that way.

RE: Hostility
I think what you have to do is stop and think before you type whether or not you're angry at the person writing or the ideas they're presenting. My opinion is if you think their ideas are shite, and you tailor your language as such, then.... full speed ahead! But only if you can back yourself up...otherwise you're opening yourself up for the same treatment.

If you find you're angry at the person, maybe it would be worth exploring why you're feeling so hurt or hostile before you post anything.

RE: Hostility
I think when responding to someone's claims or arguing a point, it's important to always remember the desired result. In most cases this is truth, or to convince the other person that their reasoning is faulty. Hostility is no substitute for logic and reason and in some cases might mask an otherwise good argument. Either you can refute the other person or you can't. If the other person just won't reason with you no matter what then it might be time to call Mr. Asshat by his name.
