Death is the single greatest mystery in science and
will remain so for a very long time for obvious reasons
But I am not afraid of it although I am of dying which is not
the same. But I accept death and regard it as an eternal state
of non-consciousness. Now to me that is far better than any human
attempt at metaphysical fiction. You are going to be at peace for a period
of time beyond measure. Could anybody explain to me why one should fear that

Well,only something to which I do not look forward. I really have no idea. Nor am I comforted by the simple reality that nobody else does ether.
Afraid? Of dying? Of course,all mammals are; it's a hardwired survival instinct as far as I can tell . Afraid of BEING dead? No,it's not an experience as far as I can tell.
When you are dead :You have snuffed it,become deceased, no longer extant,are pushing up daisies,have kicked the bucket,carked it, passed away, passed over ,up down or indifferent.You are an ex-person;you are bleedin' dead mate.
This song by Iris Dement pretty much reflects my attitude to death. (do your best to ignore the adenoids) On seeing this clip you will understand why Iris is not an international fashion icon.

the sole reason this subject hasn't been explored a lot is religion, people were taught for centuries to be afraid of death, if you were raised to believe that death is just when your brain & body stop functioning, which means you don't even know you're dead.
on the other hand, if you follow a religion but you're not extremely religious, when death is near, you'd wet your pants "oh my god, I'm going to hell, I had sexual relationships outside of marriage, I didn't pray every single second for every single day, I wasted my time looking for a cure for Cancer, I should have spent my time thanking God instead of wasting it on damn science".
I've heard people cry because a relative of them died & he wasn't very religious, they didn't want him to go to hell, now that's insanity.
Judaism = sneaky evil.
Christianity = divide & conquere.
Islam = in your face evil.
same religion, different PR.

Death is what we call it when an individual's biological functions cease. Without biological functions to generate consciousness, that individual effectively ceases to exist as a living being. All that is left is the inert physical body that used to generate that individual's consciousness... and that only temporarily, as it will soon return to the earth. That individual metaphorically lives on after death in the memories of those that knew him, which means that how that individual lived his life does, in fact, make a difference (to everyone save the deceased). How one lived effects how positively or negatively one is remembered and for how long.
If someone wishes to be remembered in a specific way by his friends and loved ones after he dies, then it behooves him to live that way while he is alive. For most, that is enough incentive to be a decent person. No need to bring anything mystical into it.

Death is the inevidible result of the laws of thermodynamics.
I don't remember the exact saying but something I remember from all the funerals I've attended is this:

I've taken care of my fair share of dead people and to me it wasn't scary or uncomfortable at all. Death is something that comes to everyone, the only thing that is absolutely certain in life. I won't be able to percieve death, but if I am unlucky and percieve myself dying, I can honestly say that I will die without any regrets, since I've lived my life to the fullest.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Death is relief and end a liberation and a way of escaping the non-sense that is this world...
