I think I saw those on a Star Trek episode....just before they shot out some spores that made Spock lose his mind.
Oh! How beautiful! What a gorgeous post to come across in the morning! Thank you, pappy!
Your welcome Miss Summer, I thought you might like those.
They bloom several times in a season, but it is awfully late and cool for them to be blooming now. I gave them some leftover orchid food several weeks ago. I guess they liked it. On the plus side for the cool weather though is that the blooms are still hanging in there this morning. Normally they wilt shortly after sunrise. They are also a little smaller than usual. These blooms are probably 5-6 inches across. Usually they are 7-9. There are also more of them than usual though. That plant probably has 20-30 blossoms on it. They normally all open on the same night, but this time it looks like they are going to spread it out over a few days. This plant, which is over forty years old now, probably has 50-60 blossoms on it. They are incredibly fragrant. If they all open at once people walking down the street will be wondering into the back yard to see what it is that smells so good.

I like flowers ... but I'm just too damn straight to really get it.
They're pretty I guess. "The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest." G'Kar-B5

Flowers are much more interesting when you realize they are the sex organs of the plant.
