I've known plenty of people in America who bust their asses working hard everyday, and still have nothing to show for it. What is your explanation of that?

Well, it's hard to give such a specific answer to cases I'm not familiar with. But what do you mean by "still have nothing to show for it."?

People who work multiple jobs to try to pay their expenses and still can't make it. They end up putting things on credit cards, or fail to make payments on things, which results in loss of housing, transportation. Cost of living =/= Minimum wage, yet we won't raise minimum wages to something a person can actually live on. Why?
