Fun with Antique Medicine
http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/cultur...nline-news

Quote:After receiving our temporary personalities and a drink, we were ushered into the library, where Robin McKie, science editor at the Observer, introduced us to the evening by explaining how the body was thought to work in the 17th century. Back then, we were each thought to be made up of fluids - or humours - of four types: melancholic, phlegmatic, sanguine and choleric. It was the imbalance of these fluids that was thought to explain different moods and personalities. The challenge of the evening was to identify which fluid our contemporary characters had in abundance, and how we might address this with historic remedies and modern cuisine.

I think old quack medical devices are interesting.

As long as you always maintain they are "quack" devices...

Of course. I really don't think that shocking different parts of the body with electricity really has any beneficial medical value, unless you're using a defib.

Did you realize that the vibrator was invented to calm down hysterical women? If women couldn't be calmed down, the doctor would massage their privates to orgasm, but it proved to be tiring and took too long. Voila! The vibrator was invented which took the work out of stimulating women in order to calm them down.
