Its sad, but such is the animal kingdom.
Cows are typically very docile, curious and gentle whenever I visit them. Uncommonly I've heard of instances where one herd of bovines formed a circle around an injured farmer whose recently-purchased bull had gone into a frenzy and tried to gore him. They stood firm and wouldn't let the bull get him. Eventually the bull was destroyed but alas three adult cows also had to be put down because of their injuries.
There's a potential for accidents as with any living creature. Dog owners have found this out when they stupidly kept their canines on leash and let them provoke the herd, trampling them both as they interpret the dog as a threat to their calves. Always, always let the dog run, you walk the other way and maintain distance so the cattle will not perceive you as a threat and ignore you. Their dog can run much faster and look after itself.
You look at other animal's behaviour like dolphins for example, and they'll do strange selfless things, like Pelorus Jack, a Risso's dolphin that used to meet and safely escort ships through the Cook Strait, New Zealand.
I imagine koalas relationship with cows is no different from man's relationship with hippopotami.
