I don't know who to feel more sorry for, the nutters in church or the victims for being stupid enough to listen to them.

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity. Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist. You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
I feel sorry for neither, they truly believe and you can't take that out of them. Feeling sorry for them will do no good and also frustrate you, but ridiculing them with help you deal better with their insanity.
