So wait.... you got shitty service and you STILL tipped $5?!!
no, no, no, no, no...

First, I know this is controversial, but I'm pretty much against the tipping culture. Whatever that is should be reflected on the paycheck and ultimately on the menu prices.
Second, a shitty service like that doesn't even deserve a tip. That's how it gets reflected in the tip. If the fault was on the kitchen staff, then okay... but not on this occasion.

Actually... the kitchen staff do most of the work, do they get tips? or is it just the pretty face that serves you that gets tips?
Bah, totally against the tipping system. Argue

Generally kitchen employees make considerably more money than the wait staff. So, no, they don't get any tips.

Other party members felt the waitress should have gotten something. I, on the other hand, left her nothing.

You are a waitress. It is your job to tend to ALL of your tables. We waited over an hour for our food. When it finally arrived, everything supposed to be hot, was either lukewarm or fucking cold. You couldn't even manage to bring it out all at once. After you took three plates back, the manager came out with the food, apologizing because our food had been sitting in the window for 20 damn minutes and you were told several times to pick it up.

We waited more than 15 minutes for drink refills. Twice.
The dirty dishes on the table you "got ready" for us, was shoved onto another table with dirty dishes, which sat untouched for the two hours we were there.
The food was an hour getting out to us.
It was cold.
While there were seven of us, we didn't order anything expensive or difficult. No one ordered steak - something that takes awhile to cook or whatever.
You had three other tables. That is it. Honey - you had the biggest section to manage, but the fewest number of patrons.

I'm in the service industry too, sweetheart. Most people don't realize, but like you, I also have to rely on my tips and not the actual paycheck, to live off of. Since you are aware of this reality, you should have done much better, knowing your tip would be reflected in the service (or lack of) you provided.

You are young. Early twenties, I'm guessing. So, take some advice from a seasoned adult who is a few dozen levels higher than you -

When you do a shitty job, it WILL be reflected in your tip. When you go above and beyond - that will also be reflected in your tip. Incidentally - I will be calling the corporate offices of the chain restaurant we ate at last night to not only complain about your lack of skills, but also for the fact that management did not do everything they should have done to correct this problem. I'm going to recommend that they retrain you and your manager because neither one of you can handle an unusual busy Tuesday night. I'm also asking for all of my money back because our dining experience was by far, the worst I have ever experienced there. And this is typically one of my go-to restaurants because even for a chain restaurant, I really do like the food (usually).

After you file your complaint don't return to eat there for awhile, if ever. At least I wouldn't.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

Mind you, $62 would possibly pay for two people's dinner here, at most.

LL, I don't get Maccas much because it's just shit, full stop, but I was forced to eat something with 5 minutes to spare last night (very sick MIL).
$36 fucking dollars and I was still hungry? (Pam had a big mac and large fries, same here and with a filet o fish thingy)

Bare in mind I only eat once a day...

It's not just cultural over here. Wait staff, in most states in America, can be payed WAY below minimum wage.

In Tennessee, where I live, wait staff minimum wage is $2.13 per hour. So, they are pretty much working for tips. There is never any excuse for service that bad, but I always tip because you never know what is going on in that person's life that may have just made them shitty at their job that day. Also, they probably have kids or dependents, (just playing the odds), so I don't want to be a reason why a kid doesn't eat or something.

How the hell is anyone supposed to live on $2.13 an hour?

When asked about a tip when you get shitty service say, "Don't swim in shark infested waters', or, "Don't make toast while in the bath".

How is 2.13 indeed minimum wage? It's way below? Unionize, Strike. Get propper wage!
Seriously. I wouldn't even get mad at shitty service from someone working for 2.13 an hour. I'd be fucking miserable too.

I have so many server friends and I'm obsessed with tipping. I can't not tip. Not happening. And it's always at least 20%. At least. What they get paid an hour is nothing! Also, I always go back to the places I like and after a while they remember me. If they know my name when I walk in, I bet they remember if I'm a good tipper or not. I don't want the staff huddling in the back talking about what a douche I am and then handling my food. Heh
My server friends remember their bad tipping regulars. I don't wanna be them! Tongue

Won't lie. I didn't always think this way. I learned by listening to my friends and what they earn really sucks.

Well, I think the first thing that needs to be done is to have a decent minimum wage. Here in NZ it's $NZ15.75 an hour and in Oz I think it's $A17.90 an hour.

But, of course, the cons don't want staff to be paid a decent wage and would rather business owners get rich and get tax breaks. And it's easier to keep the "unwashed" masses down if they can't afford to live.
