How much money a year do you need to live?

RE: How much money a year do you need to live?
You can eat only potatoes and drink only whole milk, and you would lack no essential nutrients or vitamins, and suffer no deficiency in calorie. This was experimentally proven by a couple of polish researchers in 1930s who did exactly that for something like a year in a controlled experiment.

Using USDA daily neutrition recommendation, 5lbs of potatoes and a quart of milk a day will do the trick.

Based on US bureau of labor statistics of average potato retail price of about 60 cents per pound and milk price of about 90 cents per quart, your daily nutritional and calorie needs can be met for about $4.00

Add in some garnishes like salt and butter to postpone the inevitable day of puking from monotony, let's say $5/day or about $1800 a year.

Low end housing prices for one room apartment in the US is $550/month. Average utility for such an apartment is $120/month. So average cost of dwelling would be about $8500per year.

So I would say the minimum typical cost of living in a way that does not appear to be total indigence to the eyes of American society, that includes adequate nutrition would be between $10000-12000/year for a single person.

Of course if you want to live in a backwoods shack with no power or running water, like Theodor Kazinsky the Unibomber, you can do with less.

But if you assert people without means ought to live like the Unibomber in the US because those living in the slums of Manila are even worse off, rest assured enough people without means will find the means to turn into unibombers and blow you up.
