What else should I hate about Win 8.1 before I pull the trigger on a new system?Based on my limited experience with it, once you get used to using it the way Microsoft wants it should be just fine. They want you using the start screen with the tiles instead of the desktop. Removing the start menu makes the desktop pretty useless and forces you to figure out how to configure and use the start screen. Once you get past that, you are good to go.
At least until Windows 9 changes something else.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
