Well, you can deny it all you want. The NOI had the right idea. They tried to culturally dissociate themselves from the whites by changing their religion, names and extending their heritage beyond the slavery era.
Know that they didn't come to America voluntarily, like the other immigrants, they were brought in as slaves, and were forcibly assimilated, with all their knowledge about their roots prior to slavery erased.
They became mankurts, in every sense of the world. The NOI realized that the slavery was in fact, a slavery of the mind and of the spirit of the black people in the USA, a worse condition than actual slavery I'd say.
