I'm from one of the countries originally responsible for most of the international slave trade originating in Africa, so I can budge in a bit!
As for the flag, I couldn't care less what it means. If some people find it offensive, then the problem lies with those people.
Much like the words... negro or black...
Apparently, black is the politically correct word to use when referring to dark skinned people, while negro is a pejorative term.
Around here, we also have the "negro" word and black translates to "preto". Maybe negro has the same etymology for both our languages, but the evolution became disparate.
"Negro" is the politically correct way of referring to these peoples, while "preto" is very offensive.
My mum always used the word "preto". She kept banging my head with the notion that I should never bring a preta (black girl) home... Maybe because of that, I have never found black women particularly pretty... I admit some have fine bodies, but the face is always a disappointment... unless there's some mixed ethnicity in there, like with Tara Banks... or some brazilian women!
