My salary gets reduced by income tax and student loan repayments as well, so at the end of the day I would class myself as "comfortable", but certainly in no financial state to holiday and save for a (decent) computer.
I suppose I could live somewhere cheaper, but the benefits of my current place really make up for the costs. I have a place to my own, it's in the centre of town, and it's nice to live in.

You could try my method of getting a new PC, one or two new parts each paycheck. Put it together when you get it all home.
