It's not an act if God never did it. In Genesis 22 God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son as a test-- and stopped him once he demonstrated his faith. In Abraham's time and place, it was normal for pagan religions to sacrifice their children (to Baal). God used this test to show He is different from the other "gods." Instead of sacrificing Abraham's son, He provided a ram as the sacrifice. The ram represents Jesus who, 1700 years later, took our place and died for our sins.

In the mythology, god did do it. He told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. He may have stopped him, but he still told him to do it.

Precisely. The appalling act was not that Abraham killed his son, it was the fact that god asked him to do it.

Also appalling ... the way christians justify human sacrifice simply because of the time period in which it was considered "acceptable."

A horse shit excuse.

Why would an omniscient god need to put man to the test?

because he was bored?
because he's a sadist?
because he wanted to see how pathetic & naive a human could be?
because he's a self-absorbed narcissist who needs extreme forms of validation?

Maybe there is a god and he's just pure evil.

I mean really ... whoever said that a god of the universe HAD to be good????

I won't do it even if God was standing in front of me demanding me to do it. I will go to hell either way (as A-theists would interpret it) - by listening to God, I committed a murder and by not listening to God, I committed a blasphemy. But tell you what, the blasphemy will be lesser of the two "evils", as you (A-theists) would put it. I believe my God will not condemn me to Hell for blasphemy. It would be more of a test. If I can sacrifice my own blood and flesh by listening to someone else (even if He is the creator of the universe), I don't deserve Heaven anyway.

And yet you don't see the irony in any of what you just said. [Image: ShakeHead_ZPDD8V.gif]

This is what sacrifice is all about. I suppose it is not politically correct now. The state rules the family not the father. The state makes abortion ok instead.

Fuck me. Just, fuck me.

You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Ok, let's cut the crap right here. The concept of sacrifice entails wilfully giving up something of personal value; the greater the value, the greater the sacrifice, with the ultimate sacrifice being that of one's own life. All this you have the right to do if that is your wish. You absolutely do not have the right to involve another person in the act. You certainly do not have the right to demand it of others against their will. Any god that is held as the standard of morality, whether such a being exists or not, ought to know this. That anyone could look at this story (and more damning ones such as that of Jephthah in Judges 11:29-39) and not see any problem tells me more about that person than they may have intended; not to say more than I wished to know.

In your trying to defend the actions of these characters by pointing to others who behave the same, I'm mindful of Col Ingersoll's wise counsel: "They knew no better, but I do not propose to follow the example of a barbarian because he was honestly a barbarian."

Finally, re: abortion. Let's say for the sake of discussion that abortion equals murder. Have you any idea how many foetuses abort spontaneously without any human or 'state' intervention? That's without even mentioning the many millions of fertilised ova that never implant and get flushed away without the woman ever being aware of it. What's all that about? Embryonic suicide?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Why do you think the sacrifice is for God if you don't believe in one and God does not make sense to you? Atheists seem to challenge their own logics here.

Cannot speak for anyone else, but.

It is the people that believe in this horseshit and give poor excuses for murdering a child - sacrifices to anything, proving their righteousness for their fable/mythological - god. It is plain and simple you believe in a psychosis, something which we have medications for.

Thinking a burning bush is talking is either a psychological deficiency, or and LSD - Peyote trip.

Opps sorry I drowned my infant but god spoke to me that this was the anti christ. Do we believe in this today?????

Has this happened in the news? Yes a few times and at least one excuse was evil and being closer to god. Examined by doc's and because this woman had xtian fever with hubby had child after child after child and had suffered among other problems with post postpartum depression.

NOW we know these are people that have psychological problems and don't shout 'free will'.

Wake up and smell the coffee I make it really strong.
