I basically came out to my mom...

She wipes the tears that are still in the corner in her eye and just says "You're funny. You're always so serious" And she continues chuckling a little bit. And then we just dropped it and moved on to whatever else...

Well, this strongly reminds me of Dark Night - remember the line "Why soooo serioussss?" Smile

Of course I have no way of knowing your family but the whole thing seems too good to be true. I think it is possible your mom was chuckling to cover up the possibility of you doing something so socially unaccaptable and dangerous as being serious about it. Let us not forget that religion is also a form of social repression so without ever considering theology etc. religious people will tell you that not believing in God and being open about it is just socially unacceptable.

The whole thing looks to me more like "Mom I am gay" "Oh you said that so seriously as if you really meant it, you are so funny, you being gay - haha that was a good one".

Coming out is dangerous, it is like coming out of the woods to see tons of guns pointed at you. Unless you are absolutely sure there are no guns, don't do it. Religious people are religious because they do not have open minds and therefore are usually repressive towards you. Your mom could not have attacked you with a pitchfork because she is your mom so she did what was "socially acceptable" for her - turned it all into a joke and implied that you were joking and are very good at it by being so funny when you pretend that you're serious.

Kudos to you for coming out, kudos to your mom if she understood and accepted it Smile
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

I'm very happy for you!! It's really cool that your mom didn't blow up at you or start preaching to you. I don't know you or your family but my hat is off to you for having the courage to let her know that you don't believe the same as they do. Whether she believed you or not, all you can do is tell them how you feel. It's their choice if they want to think you're joking or not....

Congratulations on coming out! I'm glad some people get better responses from people they care about.

I was the image of perfection to my parents before I came out to them. They thought I was joking for the first 5 years. Then, they got really offensive about it, and then my family turned on me sometime around the Reason Rally. I don't regret it. My parents and extended family are stupid regardless, and I don't have to deal with them.
