I think it has to do with that whole "Eve was taken from Adam's rib" thing.
Therefore, in religion, all life begins as male, hence the status superiority. Which is funny because the reverse is true in human biology. As the fetus is a female the first (6?) weeks and then changes depending on blah blah blah.

I can make a case (from the Old and New Testament, along the Dead Sea Scrolls, Nag Hammadi and Jewish mystical texts) that personified wisdom or Sophia in Judaism (which in Christianity became the Holy Spirit) is the feminine aspect of god, while Yahweh (the father in Christianity) is the masculine aspect.
In latter Christianity in order to make god more transcendent perhaps, that male/feminine aspect of god thing was dropped, while god still continued by be called "he".

If God was Female, the world would be not in such a shit state. It would be Clean, pleasant and She would have forgive us after a dame good telling off and grounding. Also She would have made everybody equal, and would have been her to talk to all of us, when we asked for her. Also she would not have made any bullshit rules, like starving yourself for a month or cutting of bits of your genitals or who you can or can not sleep with e.t.c.
