Hundreds of proofs of nothing!

RE: Hundreds of proofs of nothing!
I get the feeling that list was though up by an atheist as a way of summarising the sorts of arguments that get brought up by theists. It wasn't actually theists that made the list as a way of proving god.

Quite probably. There is a Christian sect in the US in which members believe snakes cannot harm them. A gratifying number have died from snake bite (photos with link)Angel Cloud

Quote:Snake handling or serpent handling is a religious ritual in a small number of Pentecostal churches in the U.S., usually characterized as rural and part of the Holiness movement. The practice began in the early 20th century in Appalachia, spreading to mostly coal mining towns. The practice plays only a small part of the church service of churches that practice snake handling. Practitioners believe serpent handling dates to antiquity and quote the Book of Mark and the Book of Luke to support the practice:

And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:17-18)

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (Luke 10:19)

^ This. When have you ever heard a theist actually refer to their argument as "God of the Gaps?"

if god doesn't exist why are there so many religions? seems to me like they are all trying to tell people about god yet have trouble finding the right truth (christianity)

Belief has fuck all to do with reality. This 'its real for him' is logically pointless. Its no point getting the pest controllers in because your 4 year old thinks there are monsters under the bed' its true for him' means nothing. he belives something that isn;t true.

there is a reality out there whether we like it or not.

Reality should tell them that there is no evidence for any god. Even their own.

You really need some logic beating in to you.

Don't they know that 'logic' doesn't actually 'prove' anything? It's a philosophical concept, not a tool like the scientific method.
The things they try to get a little support for their crazy beliefs heh?
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

If you wish to see fallacies, you will see them. It all comes down to where your faith is directed to.

There are only 3 ways in which something can be said to exist.

1. As a concept of language.
2. As a concept of mind.
3. In reality.

So, when you say that, "if someone has faith that something exists, it exists (for them)", in which of the above ways does it exist for them?

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
