I still believe in the 2nd amendment. I have a hard time accepting only cops being allowed to have guns. The problem is the lack of common sense laws and safeguards but there will always be examples of violence with guns and if guns are gone those killers will find another way to do their killing.

Nor is "any old shithead" my idea of whom the 2nd amendment applies to. Law abiding citizens of the united states, more like.

That is not, however, what it says:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Militia had a distinct meaning in the 18th century - and Washington thought very little of them - but it took a really tortured reasoning by the conservative wing of the court to ignore the well-regulated part (which had been clear enough to everyone from 1788 to 2008!) and rule that any shithead could have a gun.
And as this thread shows, plenty of shitheads now have them.

Plenty of shitheads do own guns, but it's -still- not a case of "any old shithead". Our gun laws aren't working, that doesn't mean we don't have any. Felons, for example, have that right removed (specifically since 1934 and broadly since 1968). They are not law abiding citizens, and this has stood firm against the constitutional challenge.
