Pope: "Atheists can go to heaven"- intellectual dishonesty?

RE: Pope: "Atheists can go to heaven"- intellectual dishonesty?
Doesn't matter if I can go or not, I don't wanna! Tongue
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Doesn't matter anyway: a couple days later a Vatican spokesman took it upon himself to clarify that atheists are still totally going to hell.

There's that nice fellow feeling religion is supposed to inspire, huh?

LOL I didn't actually know that. They need to calm down and stick to one story.

I never really understood that criticism in all honesty. What's more important, inspiring other people or telling others what you think are the facts? There's no point giving people false hope.

The issue is that the religious have never been able to convincingly demonstrate the reality of hell to an atheist, so to us it's nothing more than a threat, and an admission that the person saying it believes we should be tortured forever.

It's a different connotation, really.

Well, of course it's a threat, there's no question about that. But some prominent Atheists like Penn Jillette don't agree with your take. You might not believe in a hellfire, but to accuse a person who does of insincerity is taking a step beyond your pay grade so to speak.

If someone genuinely believes that you will be punished, they have a duty to warn you, an obligation, it's a part of being an empathetic human. Whereas if I believed that you will be punished and I didn't care to warn you, or even worse, gave you false hope or security, what kind of twisted sadistic person would I be? Like Penn said, only a person who is really evil would do such a thing.
