Well, my nosy aunt was looking up my name on the internet and found it. She told my parents. (We don't talk anymore because she's a Jesus freak.) My parents didn't freak out, but they weren't happy with it. My mom still thinks it's a "phase", and it's been about 10 years since they found out. LOL Oh, well.

Wow, who needs the NSA when you have an aunt like that...

I did the day I finally decided I wasn't a Catholic anymore.

Basically I said to my mother, "I'm not going to church anymore. It's nonsense."

I applaud your frankness.

It is with tremendous shame that I must admit that talking to my mother about it shall be the hardest trial. She is helplessly devoted to a spiritual existence.

With the cat entirely slipping free of the bag now - what with me admitting to my Catholic school employers that I am an atheist teacher - I am certain that this revelation will not take long to transpire subsequently.

I am lucky that my father is also an atheist and he stated that my brother and I should be free to make our own choices.

I've gotten a lot freer about posting non-religious and atheistic things on facebook and no one has in my family has said anything about it. It's just not talked about in my family.

It's hard for me to imagine the stress of living with a big secret and having to create a whole duplicate online life in order to pursue it so your family doesn't find out about it. That's gotta be tough.

When I was growing up, my father was a minister. Then he studied the bible very hard and subjected it to stringent review, became a professor, became an atheist. Retired an atheist. Can't say a prayer with a straight faced when asked.

Wouldn't be hard for me. Wink

I really wish I could tell my parents, but somewhat got a preview of what will happen. I but bought the book God is Not Great with my mom, I said that I was curious. So got home read a few chapters, she didn't mind and asked if it was good though she said she didn't like the title. So the day after, I think she looked up the author in the internet then bam. Asked if I was an atheist I paused for a long time and didn't answer. She said she can't take it anymore there are too many problems which concerns me (I have phobias and go to the doctor) and now you're an atheist and said will go crazy if you are. Then I asked so you can't accept me if I were. She said no and she said so you think you're bigger than life huh and she said she doesn't know any successful atheists (which is somewhat expect because our country is pretty much a Catholic country). So I said Bill Gates is an atheist. She said then he must have sold his soul to the devil then. I also stated that a person reading a book written by an atheist doesn't automatically make the reader atheists. Then we argued some more and after a while and I made a somewhat dumb excuse the worked. I said I was just testing her if she can accept me no matter what. The next day she was more calm and nicer, I think she looked up famous atheists and was probably surprised.

Though since that incident I haven't read the book and pretty much gave me a reason not to tell her. I just downloaded the audiobook version of God is Not Great and listened to it. Sorry for the long post just want to lay it all out.

Its a brave thing you bought the book with your mom in the first place . and I also think its very reasonable and rational of you to deny the fact that your are an atheist , when you find out that she just won't get along with it like this .

anyways , welcome to AF , enjoy your stay.
