Shout "There is no God!" and then slap em in the face.
You don't have to slap em if you they are nice though.

I don't know why many people feel like they have to come out of the closet on this.

There are friends I have that know I am an Atheist but most people don't. I look at it like this, if someone pushes me in a corner about it I'm gonna hurt their feelings with some cold hard facts. Otherwise I just live and let live.

I still go to my parents church from time to time out of respect to them. It doesn't bother me at all to walk in a church. I just simply don't believe. It's no big deal.

There are a lot of things I don't believe in but I'll watch a movie about it and be entertained. If it's a movie about Vampires I don't feel compelled to point out that I don't believe in them.

Just loosen up and don't give a crap about it. One day they will know that you don't believe. My parents really suspect that I find the bible to be a load of shit but I don't just come out and say it because they raised me and I respect them.

Probably for the same reason that I feel no one should be in the closet about anything.

In the end, it all depends on the individual and how s/he wants to live. I can give advice that it is better to be open about one's self, but in the end it is each individual's decision as to what should be done.

The time I lived in the bible belt let me realize one thing: it eats your soul when you are reminded every day, in all kinds of situations, that your kind is officially seen as a lesser type of human being, untrustworthy, and to be shunned. Now minorities feel this every day everywhere, but this is when I felt it. You at some point feel the need to jump up and yell: stop telling lies about us!

Wear a pro-scientology T-shirt until they ask you about it then say "don't worry, I'm only an atheist"

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

You know what?

Thinking

That might actually work.

Big Grin
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.

I am with Clueless Morgan. You have a good gauge on your parents by this point in your life. If you think they will react in such a way that will be detrimental to you, then wait three years. Study hard, go to college in another state, study hard some more, and get a good job. Tell them at your leisure. If your parents are calmer, more nurturing, and less likely to freak out, then tell them, but be prepared for a reaction. It will be a surprise, and they are allowed to have a reaction.

I didn't tell my parents until I was a freshman in college. I knew I would not have to rely on them for money any longer, and that there was nothing they could do to 'coerce' me back into their religion. They didn't do that anyways, but I did not take the risk.

So, really, there is no way to make this easier. You have to use your judgement as to what is the best way to do it.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
