When a plaintiff gets awarded damages - we don't cut the check out to his wife. Just another way that we finesse our system to include the death penalty (and how we handle it - thinking it handled - when it goes awry).
On principle, sure, compensation for wrongful imprisonment isn't likely to be adequate either - but at least the guy gets to bitch about how little he got for his trouble after the fact, he might even have legal options available to pursue justice - over and above any monetary sum. At least, in short, he isn't dead, and that's a pretty big deal eh? The fact the we compensate people at all shows that we know there ought to be a way to address the grievance of an individual convicted in error. I don't see how the death penalty allows us to do that. A check to the deceased's spouse is blood money, a tribute to guilt.

No matter how hideous some crimes can be, nothing justifies making another being suffer, there must be no exception to this rule, opening up special cases would lead to progressively consider all criminals should suffer. That's not even the main purpose of the criminal system but ok, the general public seems to understand it that way. I think people who cherish violence and say criminals should be tortured and then executed should pick up the axe and do it themselves, let's seem how brave they really are.

Few people can remain calm and collected in times like these, so I don't blame anyone for wanting to make someone suffer as they were made too. Whether it's right or not is debatable, but there's a reason why anger is a listed stage of the grieving process.

True story, and justice based on revenge is not justice, even though pro death penalty activists see it as such (wrongly!).

But defending the death penalty because of a thirst for blood is called an appeal to emotions fallacy. There's a reason why the victims/relatives don't have a right to dictate the sentence and courts are impartial. Why do you think that is?

Yes, we must resist appeals to emotion in many things. I think doctors are discouraged from operating on loved ones too. "Too close to the situation", as they say.

I used to be very pro-death penalty. Between 1983 and 1987, four people I knew were murdered. Years later, I realized that my support of the death penalty was based on a desire for revenge, and justice had very little to do with it. I'm now very much opposed to executing people.
