Like others have said, fusion power. That's a world changer. Climate change goes away and large-scale desalination of seawater becomes practical.

A working space elevator is a close second.

It is my understanding that climate change won't go away for another thousand years or so, no matter what we do. We can just hope to stop it from getting too bad in the future, we can't stop it altogether - it's too late for that. And maybe it's too late for anything, really. But that's just my understanding.

That would take hundreds of years. No government is going to want to put that much money into it, even if it were to mean saving the species. Not saying I'm against it, I'm just being pessimistic about it I guess.

I don't know much about the subject yet ( no one really does I suspect) but yes while it would take a long time most of that time would simply be waiting. Once your done shaping the planetiod and inducing a magnetic field it would be akin to making wine. We would be using natural processes for our own ends. With a whole lot of simply waiting.

I am reading the Spin series now. Very similar plot right there. The earth is encircled by a sort of plasma that makes time be experienced at a different rate than the rest of the universe. Inside this area, for instance, 1 minute equals thousands of years from the outside - I'm not sure about those numbers, but it's something crazy like that. And they just terraformed Mars in order to find out what happened to them. It's really cool.

I hope we can reverse the aging process one day, since it's the only thing that really matters, let's be honest.

Either that or create far smarter than human general AI.

By my reckoning, any one of these would solve all of our problems, whether long-term(first option) or short-term(the other one).

I was thinking. Say scientists create a pill which lets you live a lot longer, or even forever. Would Christians take the pill? Would they put off going to heaven, perhaps completely? It would sure be an interesting test of faith to see if someone wants to take their chances and die regardless.
