The story could include a "miracle-ometer". It's a handy device I have invented. When something unusual happens, a timer starts. Everyone in the vicinity who witnessed it has about 5 minutes to produce a full scientific explanation for what happened. If no one does, an alarm goes off, and the screen lights up with, "Miracle!"

You can optionally input your favourite deity beforehand, to alter the readout to, "Miracle caused by [my magic pal's name]!"
