List of people who have no interest in joining a religion, ever

RE: List of people who have no interest in joining a religion, ever
Agreed.  If it were proven that god exists religions would still be Fked up.  Strangely, if the god of any particular religion were real, that god would probably be bummed that that particular religion is so Fked up.  That's a pretty big stretch though  FSM Grin

No religion for me, thanks.

Cool, thanks guys Smile

I agree, if there is some sort of God, I find the current portrayals really insulting. However, I'd wager that "God" would turn out to be far less impressive and powerful than any theists lowest expectation.

The idea that a super powerful being in any way requires or enjoys the worship/praise of peons is a ludicrous contradiction in terms. The religious gods are obviously just magical humans.

I've always wondered why a god would want people acting like a bunch of mindless drones. Is it too much to ask for a god that values individuality and free thought?

Exactly! He gives us a brain, and the "free will" we're so often told about, and then wants us to shut it off and just believe whatever we're told without question. What kind of weird being are we dealing with? Sounds messed up.

Wait a moment.  Let's not go crazy here.  Some religions have definite benefits over all the Angry Desert God horseshit.  Now, if someone would, as Herodotus tells us, start up a little Babylonian worship I might see my way clear to join.

Quote:199. The Babylonians have one most shameful custom. Every woman born in the country must once in her life go and sit down in the precinct of Venus, and there consort with a stranger. Many of the wealthier sort, who are too proud to mix with the others, drive in covered carriages to the precinct, followed by a goodly train of attendants, and there take their station. But the larger number seat themselves within the holy enclosure with wreaths of string about their heads- and here there is always a great crowd, some coming and others going; lines of cord mark out paths in all directions the women, and the strangers pass along them to make their choice. A woman who has once taken her seat is not allowed to return home till one of the strangers throws a silver coin into her lap, and takes her with him beyond the holy ground. When he throws the coin he says these words- "The goddess Mylitta prosper thee." (Venus is called Mylitta by the Assyrians.) The silver coin may be of any size; it cannot be refused, for that is forbidden by the law, since once thrown it is sacred. The woman goes with the first man who throws her money, and rejects no one. When she has gone with him, and so satisfied the goddess, she returns home, and from that time forth no gift however great will prevail with her. Such of the women as are tall and beautiful are soon released, but others who are ugly have to stay a long time before they can fulfil the law. Some have waited three or four years in the precinct.

Gotta go stock up on silver dollars.

Wow !!

So how would the One True God, and One True Faith actually work ??

Well, it would depend on the god I guess.  What if it's that 'pig god' Captain Bligh worships ???

Might be altogether unpleasant . . .

A religious theist often seems to think that if they can convince the atheist that god is real and their religion is "true", then the atheist would automatically convert to the religion.

This is just completely wrong. My refusal to join any religion has nothing to do with whether it is true or not. I find the whole idea ridiculous, and I am simply not interested. So even if you did manage to convince me your religion is the "real one", I wouldn't care. I'd just be a theist with no religion, someone who believes in god but does not worship it.

I have got the feeling a lot of people here share this view, so I thought it would be interesting to collect some names. So if you have the same stance as me, please post here! I thought it could be useful to point people to when they are making the very basic mistake I have outlined. Some people seem literally incapable of understanding this, and I don't know how much clearer I can make it. The more open minded theists however seem to understand this just fine.

I am not sure how many atheists will really seriously consider this, but here is my take.

I believe in God existence hence I am a theist
I do not follow Christianity
I do not follow Islam
I do not follow Hinduism
I do not follow Judaism
I do not follow Buddhism
I do not follow any religion I may have left out in this list or you may come up with
I do not follow Atheism

I do like reading the Bible
I do like reading the Koran
I do like reading the Vedas
I do like reading religious scriptures
I do also read Atheistic philosophy and/or points of view

I am not against Science and yes I do read/watch science books/videos, etc.   But Science does not have answers for everything, and in many aspects will never, for example, meaning of life and yes, I do ponder on this, because I have right to do so.

I do not like fundamental Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Buddhist, Atheists, etc.

I do not feel theists can be fundamentalists, because it has a simple basic principle of believing in God existence, there should be no other dogma.  I do not consider religions to be theistic
because they have dogma.

And even if you think theists can be fundamentalists, they would need dogma for it, and therefore, are not theists anymore.

Overall after reading and talking to all types of individuals, there is a core of beliefs/views/morals/etc that are consistent across all religions and atheism (with the exception of God existence
in that case).

I agree with one of Buddha's point when asked which religion and religious book is too be considered the paramount to follow.  After deep thought, he replied "Take those points from all texts that will benefit humanity and ignore those that don't"

Yes, I am crude.  I also will say what seems vulgar to be vulgar.  There some atheists that are vulgar.  There are also some religious leaders who are vulgar too.  I do not like people (Atheist/religious) who try to defend others just because they happen to be believing the same ideals/views/philosophy/etc

It is not only religious people that despise some Atheists. Other Atheists do not like some of their own.  Why ? Because there are bad Atheists that make Atheists look bad.

Most Atheists are very unwilling to have open dialogue even though they make high claims that they more open than religious people.

I do not consider Atheism as a good option.  At best, Atheism has good arguments against dogma in religion, but beyond that there is NOTHING.

Yes I have seen bad in religion and the same bad I have also seen in Atheism.  Atheism did not offer to me a better alternate.

I believe in God existence thru personal experience, which is hard to prove to others.  I do not expect anyone to believe it nor do I care.

I am not here to change your mind, and I am not expecting it to happen nor wishing for it to happen

Let me know when you attain that goal.  Don't try it in the middle east.  They'll throw rocks at your head.
