Christoid Logic

It was after a physics class and a group of us had gone down to play pool in the student hall.  The kid asked me if I believed in god and I said not really and then he started ranting about the day's class.  The conversation went something like this:

Kid:  "The big bang theory is obviously wrong.  I don't know why we study it at all."
Me:  "Well, there's significant evidence to support the theory."
Kid:  "Can't be..."
Me:  "Why?"
Kid:  "Obviously because you can't create something from nothing."
Me:  "Well, by that logic, where did your god come from."

Kid:  "He's god."

Of course, it ended up with me explaining to him that that made zero sense using his own logic and asking why can't he simply accept that while there is evidence supporting the original origins of our particular universe, the overall understanding is beyond our current ability of understanding.  Its fine to make something up if you need the comfort to sleep at night but its no better than believing that glitter farting magic unicorns are real.

Is it just me or do most conversations with theists just end up being similarly idiotic?

god or gods are not necessary for the current universe to exist. if said being existed he is truly a uncaring monster as
most of the universe we see is 99.99% uninhabitable we would surely die going there.

Or rather, cognitive dissonation?

I don't see how. I feel confident enough in my beliefs that other people not believing it doesn't bother me. That's all there is to it.

I actually have no issue with anything other's believe.  But if someone is  going to bring up a religious point then they shouldn't be so sensitive to a potential counter.

What I didn't mention is that this conversation was overheard by others at the pool table and they also jumped in.  When this guy was unsuccessful at getting the group to agree with him (they were mostly a variety of science-related majors), he ended up just getting pissed off and telling everyone that we were going to hell before he left.

What often irritates me personally is that they equate religious guesses to scientific theory and get offended when someone explains why that is invalid.

A christer I worked with at the defense contractor (!!) (divorced and remarried too!!!) didn't believe science understood or could explain how the sun managed to shine.

I advised her to think about the folks in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and how they might feel about her attitude.

Probably the only occasion I ever got her to shut up about something.

Yeah, Peggy, here's president Truman putting it in terms even you can understand:

August 6, 1945

THE WHITE HOUSE
Washington, D.C.

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima and destroyed its usefulness to the enemy. That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of TNT. It had more than two thousand times the blast power of the British "Grand Slam" which is the largest bomb ever yet used in the history of warfare.

The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold. And the end is not yet. With this bomb we have now added a new and revolutionary increase in destruction to supplement the growing power of our armed forces. In their present form these bombs are now in production and even more powerful forms are in development.

It is an atomic bomb. It is a harnessing of the basic power of the universe. The force from which the sun draws its power has been loosed against those who brought war to the Far East.

. . . .

I agree with your first line, cherry.

As for the rest, I guess I just don't really care when people of other religions bring up things that I don't think make any logical sense. To each their own.

The kid getting upset that no one else agreed with him applies as well of course.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Except that it does make logical sense.

Try not being a three year old with the why syndrome.

Ooops, ignore that.

She quoted after I quoted, because I thought it was for me.
