It was put in so that a foreigner didn't come in who didn't share the values and traditions of the US, and subvert the government and take it over. The whole thing about Canada Cruz being born a US citizen doesn't match up with anchor babies of Chinese women having babies born in the US to become US citizens. Under Cruz logic, those Chinese nationals who had babies born in the US would be Chinese citizens. It's completely backwards.

The news likes to go around telling us what the "experts" claim as if they are gods to trusted, but rarely go into the details.

Cruz was born a U.S. citizen since his mother was an American living in Canada. The U.S. Constitution requires a candidate for president be a "natural born citizen." Most experts believe Cruz is a natural born citizen, but no president has ever been born outside the U.S.
