Free will and humans
#21
RE: Free will and humans
You tell me my logic is false and then pitch straw?  FFS Pool, at least try.

Step 1, come up with a definition for free will that isn't internally contradictory.
Step 2, come up with a way to show that free will exists that doesn't assume free will exists.
Step 3, Profit.

That's all there is to it.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

So I do have free will even though I am incapable of throwing a rock as heavy as a mountain?

There's no need for me to address this particular concern of yours, as it's not my own.

RE: Free will and humans
I have control over my actions.
Since I have control over my actions I have free will.
Free will exists because I have control over my actions.

*I have defined free will.
*Demonstrated that I poses free will.
*Showed that free will exists without assuming free will exists.

RE: Free will and humans
Pooley, we possess the illusion of free will.
Hard to go past S.Harris when he says we have no control of the next thought which will pop into our head. Hence zero free will.
No God, No fear.

That's the analogical equivalent of saying I don't poses free will since I can't pick up and throw a mountain.
I already said how this logic is false.

How do you know you have control over your actions?

What does "you" even mean in this context?

I know I have control over my actions since I can choose to do something the next minute and then do it.
I don't understand the second question..

I don't exactly know anything about Sam Harris apart from his name,I'm sure he is exceptional since I've heard his name being mentioned at many places.

But the fact is that he is wrong about free will.
Basically all the arguments against free will boils down to something like: Suppose you were given a free choice to pick up any of the 5 water bottles in front of you and drink from it, arguments against free will goes like :We are not free to choose from the 5 water bottles since we only have a choice of water bottles to choose from and not Pepsi, coca cola, Maaza etc and hence we do not possess free will.
(see the error in logic there?)

What if your free will is limited by thousands of practical limitations and technicalities? Do you still have free will? Partial free will? Free will between the flags only?
As Rhythm and Rob said, you need to define it explicably first?

My limit of free will is whether I'll scratch my nuts before I fart or after! Yes, I am the lord and master of my own free will!
No God, No fear.

Would you say that a ball inside a fence has freedom of movement or not?
