Gorilla killed

RE: Gorilla killed
Wow, must be some sort of a new trend...

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/05/22/americ...cide-trnd/

Quote:A zoo killed two lions to save a man who jumped into the big cats' enclosure in the Chilean capital.

The man climbed over the fence Saturday and removed his clothes before approaching the lions, according to a statement posted on the Santiago Metropolitan Zoo Facebook page.[...]

[...]Once he had entered the enclosure, the intruder removed his clothes he began to bother the lions, to jump towards them and to chant "very apocalyptic, very religious" proverbs, the park's director, Mauricio Fabry told CNN. He was mauled by the lions, which began dragging him to their den, before they were shot.

If some nut got naked and started chanting religious bullsh*t at me - I'd f*cking maul him...

When an agitated animal is handling an annoying kid, it's probably safest to not agitate it further with tasers or tranquillisers.

I understand that a boy's life was in danger, but was there a reason why tranquilizers were not used?

I heard the story early yesterday, but just didn't feel like looking up the link and posting it. I have no idea why tranquilizers weren't used. The gorilla basically saved the kid from drowning in the water, and they shot him dead. People shame the Mom for not keeping closer eye on the kid, but I bet some people would still shamer her if she used a leash. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Are zoos that under-equipped that their only options are tranquilizers and wait an hour, or kill?

I think there are protocols that probably necessitate safe distance. That taser is the equivalent of a cattle prod. You gotta get up close and personal. I doubt a protocol that puts more humans in harm's way is one any zoo will adopt.

I'll venture to guess that there's a well studied reason why they choose this option.

Despite all the facetiousness above, I just want to say that I am really deeply saddened and touched by Harambe's death. How horrible. Imagine the workers in the zoo who had to kill him, who possibly had a close relationship with him over years! It's like having to kill a friend!

RE: Gorilla killed
Terrible situation. It's surprisingly easy for a 4 year old to get away from you, especially when you've got other kids with you. Parents shouldn't be charged. Zoo should probably look into improving their security if a fucking four year old can get past it unassisted. A secondary wall would work well. People seem to want to punish someone for this, but sometimes there's nobody to punish.

Tranquilizing it by movie logic would have worked, but we live in the fucking real world. Tranquing would have taken up to ten minutes. Probably would have further scared Harambe (in addition to all the yelling and screaming that was probably going on), and then who knows what he would have done.

RE: Gorilla killed
I know tranquilizers aren't as fast working in real life as in movies, but unless the Gorilla was actively torturing the kid or something, I don't think lethal force was needed. I also know he could have killed the kid instantly too, but I don't think you should kill something because a bad thing might happen.

NO, not fuck the zoo nor fuck the parents.

The only thing I am willing to say is about the enclosure design, which needs to be beefed up so this doesn't happen again. Nor do I blame the parents. Kids always get into things, and are more likely to injure themselves at home. But no, I am not against zoos, and I would have shot the gorilla too. Yes it sucks, but we are not talking about poachers in Africa shooting one for a trophy.

Yes dumbass, because tranquilizers take time to sink in, and have to pierce the skin which would cause it pain which he could have reacted to violently and killed the kid. There was no time to wait or risk pissing the gorilla off. I do think every zoo though, as a result of this, should review designs and find and fix gaps so that they don't have to do this.

It is one thing to advocate for better treatment of animals, but this is absurd. I doubt seriously anyone with a kid facing the same thing they did as parents is going to say "fuck the kid".
