I would've guessed the concept of everyone "bringing a dish" would be somewhat universal.

I myself don't normally care to participate in such events; especially in the workplace. But that's because I'm aware of the fact that a number of my co-workers are dumb, mean and/or gross. A couple of years back, we had several get severe diarrhea after sampling Some Chick's macaroni salad. Not the Thena, though.

Anything with mayo is an automatic no-go, in my book. 

Lol...And, If I know someone's a Crazy Cat Lady, that's a no-go as well.

We had one of those types at work. Multiple animals, constant BO and skin infections. Instead of cleaning her apartment she'd just move every 6 months or so.

No one would touch what she brought but she kept bringing it anyway.

By the way.... the reason it works for one of my album titles is: it's quirky and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Like my music.

We used to have a faculty/student baseball game with the physics department at the end of the school year. One year the gal who collected the money and bought the food left the food in the back of her car for several hours. Puking and diarrhea on steroids.  

Then, back in the '80s, someone was stealing food out of the fridge in one place I used to work. So someone made a chocolate cake, cut off a slice and frosted that piece with Ex-Lax mixed in with the frosting. Left it in the refrigerator, sure enough it got taken. The next day a note was left in the fridge warning whomever ate it that it had been a biological test for a new poison and the first symptom was diarrhea. No more stolen food, after that.
