RE: How important is it to you to convert theists to atheism?
I voted for the following four options:

Quote:Losing my religion was huge for me. I want to give back.

If someone wants to talk about it, I'm happy to tell them why I'm an atheist. Otherwise, got things to do.

It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other, provided they aren't pushy about selling it or making it the law.

Really just curious to know how they think about it and why. It isn't my business to change them.

First of all, 'deconvert' is much more accurate.

But yes, I want to "drag these backward motherfuckers into the present for the good of the species".

Religions are the most divisive ideology ever conceived. The sooner they fade to nothing more than background noise, the better for us all.

The most moral countries in the world, are the least religious. Nough said.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Small world, that's the only time -they- care about their beliefs too.   Wink

FUCK. You're right.

I'll amend my comment to

I only care about their beliefs when they use them as justifications to unjustly negatively impact the rights of others, while thinking they're somehow morally superior when they're anything but.

So now even if it's the only time they care about their beliefs they have to acknowledge they're horrible people for doing so.

Well sure it's important when deconverting from religion actually means introducing people to reality. Like the fact that Earth is round sphere and not flat slab of material with Sheol underneath it for dead souls and with firmament above it where upper waters reside and sometimes drip trough the holes in it that are stars, which by the way Bible preaches.

And then the rest of the science like the fact of gravity, evolution and even that men landed on the Moon. I mean that for real.

For now this forum is almost like an oasis, but I would like whole world to turn to science and we could move on to more interesting startreky stuff, to open that universe and expand our knowledge even more because sometimes I feel like the bus has already arrived and we're waiting for people to get in.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I haven't participated in debate forums since the late 90's - early 2000's, so I may be rusty; but I won't let that stop me. I'm currently studying Semantic and Materialist apologetics, but have very few sources of reading material.
